"Before you've finished your breakfast this morning, you'll have relied on half the world." - Martin Luther King Did you enjoy a mug of hot coffee this morning? Eat chocolate chip pancakes? Admire a vase of store bought flowers on your kitchen counter? These products were most likely created by workers in least developed countries. Unfortunately, these workers aren't being paid appropriately for their hard work. They are also working in dangerous conditions. 2/3 of Columbia's flower-workers suffer from pesticide exposure, which leads to dizziness and problems with blood pressure. Workers don't get paid even half of what consumers in countries such as the United States pay for them. Everyone should be treated equally and fairly and that is what fair trade is about! Buying fair trade products ensures that workers are being paid fairly and are working in safe conditions. There are other ways you can support fair trade besides buying fair trade products. A simple and effective way is to eat locally! By eating locally you not only support fair trade, but you support your community, eat healthy and are economically efficient. For these reasons I encourage you to go on the 30 MILE DIET during the last week of July and the last week of August. You don't have to give up carbohydrates or count calories on this diet! All you need to do is buy food that is produced within 30 miles of your home. GO FOR IT! Current Mood: supportive
